On the afternoon of Wednesday, June 21st, a Spotter Day took place for the first time at Ghedi Air Force Base, home to the 6th Wing of the Italian Air Force.

The “Red Devils”  warmly welcomed hundreds of enthusiasts from all over Italy and abroad, with the intention of providing them with an up-close experience of the daily life of the Wing and immersing them in operational activities.

This event is part of the numerous initiatives organized by the 6th Wing Command, as part of the celebrations for the centenary of the founding of the Italian Air Force.

Photographers had the opportunity to capture shots of the afternoon sorties, which featured a three Tornado ECR, a single Tornado IDS and three brand-new F-35As, during taxiing, takeoff, and landing phases.

The highlight of the event were the numerous formation flybys executed by the F-35A aircraft assigned to the 102nd Gruppo, as well as the mixed formation featuring Tornado and F-35 aircrafts.

To enhance the flying activities, there were also flyovers by two aircraft from the 51st Wing in Istrana, the AMX-T, and the Eurofighter F-2000.

The upcoming years are crucial for the 6th Stormo as it prepares to retire the venerable Panavia Tornado, which has faithfully served the Italian Air Force for over four decades and is nearing the end of its operational life. The Tornado is currently undergoing replacement with the more advanced F-35A, with deliveries having started in 2023 and set to continue in the years ahead.
